Sportfishing First Mate Brad shows a nice Bull Dolphin (Mahi Mahi)
A Tortuga is a unique vessel that can big game fish as easily as she can carry divers to the offshore wrecks. With her 12′ beam (her breadth or width) she is very stable at trolling speeds. A proven fish raiser, Tortuga can fish far offshore and right beside sportfishing yachts twice her length, yet she only burns a miserly 3 gallons of diesel fuel at fish trolling speeds. Tortuga is one of the best values in Morehead for the cost conscious angler that wants to take their chances for big game in the gulfstream.
Species include:
- Dolphin fish (Mahi)
- Wahoo
- Yellowfin Tuna
- Marlin
- Sailfish
- King Mackerel
- Spanish Mackerel
- Grouper
- Snapper
- Cobia
The price of fuel has changed the face of the Charter Boat industry, for both diving and fishing. At Tortuga Charters, we have a unique and fair policy that allows our customers some control over how much they pay for a day on the boat.
We have a base charter fee for the trip and our customers pay only for the amount of fuel burned that day. We simply note on the Floscan fuel management system how much fuel was burned for the day and then multiply it by the price of diesel fuel at the Morehead City Yacht Basin.
12 hours Offshore trip: $800 plus fuel used.
8 hours Inshore trip: $600 plus fuel used.
Tortuga leaves the dock at 5am sharp and returns before dinner time. A typical offshore run is 50 miles offshore, so with trolling for 6 hours, a fuel burn of 100-120 gallons can be expected.
Inshore trips are less than 20 miles offshore, leave the dock at 6am and return to the dock in the early afternoon. The average fuel burn for inshore trips is 30-50 gallons.
Fuel prices at the Morehead City Yacht Basin were $1.92 as of February 6th.
